Congratulations to Chika & Garry on your Traditional Wedding :-) It was a huge honor to be a part of your special day and celebration.
Now, this was one interesting Wedding Cake, to say the least. We researched every aspect of the cake to arrive at our little masterpiece. Kudos to our bride for walking us through her likes and dislikes so that we could put together something that would not only taste delicious but also act as a showstopper and conversation starter amongst the couple's friends and loved ones.
Here's how we did it...
THE PALM WINE KEG - Made from Calabash. I must confess, I only just learned that this bottle gourd is actually a vine grown for its fruit, and in order to "transform" it into a utensil like the Palm Wine Keg, it has to be harvested at a matured stage and dried thoroughly.
I even found myself watching movies where the famous Palm Wine Keg was featured (haha, the things you do for the love of cake)
So for the Keg, we made our moist vanilla cake with caramel buttercream filling and a chocolate ganache outer coating before wrapping it in a blend of earth tone fondant colors to achieve the overall look... boy was it a process, to say the least. Did I forget to mention we also had edible sugar "palm wine" peeking from the mouth of the keg?
THE TRADITIONAL RED LADIES CAP - Now this beauty was made using our signature Carrot Cake with Cream cheese filling and each "bead" was lovingly attached one by one to achieve the effect of the Cap.
When your client has a love for a specific flavor of cake, you just have to sneak it in there somehow, so this Cap was made specially to be taken away by the couple :-)
THE SUITCASE - All Edible with no cake dummy in sight, the suitcase was made from Vanilla Cake with Vanilla buttercream and encased in chocolate ganache. From the handle to the animal skin luggage tag, and even to the lace on the "fabrics" it was all edible.
I found myself stalking square vintage suitcases for months just to get the inspiration to create a piece of luggage that would rhyme with the overall theme.
